The class was the Pump Operators class which teaches firefighters how to operate the pumps that are in the fire engines. This particular class they went over how to draft and also the use of water from the hydrants. Drafting is the term used for getting water from an open water source, in this case the Corsica river. The members of the Goodwill Fire Company frequently do similar training sessions at the wharf as a refresher for drafting and other skills that are important. Drafting is commonly used in rural area settings due to the lack of fire hydrants, or what we sometimes call “water trees” growing outside of the incorporated towns throughout the Centreville area, queen annes county area and most of the eastern shore.
With that being said, if you have an open water source near your house like a pond, stream or river that we could potentially use as a draft site please let us know. We are always looking to enhance our water supply capabilities. We even have an option of installing a dry hydrant which again would help us get water to much needed areas in the event of a fire.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and as always. Stay safe. |
